INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP

Associate, Student & Zoological Specialist Membership Application

Professional Membership Application

Benefits of individual membership:

• Quarterly ZAA Newsletter & Journal
• The opportunity to submit articles for the newsletter
• An invitation to the ZAA Annual Conference
• The opportunity to exchange ideas with other members
• Legislative updates affecting the industry
• Access to the Members Only site, which includes the newsletter archives for the ZAA and the International Society of Zooculturists, and the Resources page with industry standard and best practice documents
• The opportunity to vote and hold office (Professional members only)
• Access to view the Available and Wanted Animal List.  Listing animals requires an annual fee. (Professional members only)

Procedures for individual membership applications:

Associate membership application:

a) Submit an application for associate membership. (See below for individual category requirements)
b) Submit $50 annual dues.

Student membership application:

a) Submit an application for student membership. (See below for individual category requirements)
b) Submit $35 annual dues.

Zoological Specialist application:

a) Submit an application for Zoological Specialist.  (See below for individual category requirements)
b) Submit $75 annual dues.

Professional membership application:

a) Submit an application for professional membership. (See below for individual category requirements)
b) Submit two letters of sponsorship from current ZAA Professional members. Only one sponsor may be from your facility. The sponsors must be from separate facilities and may not be related to each other. (Sponsors should send the letters directly to the ZAA office.)
c) Receive a pro simple majority vote of the Membership Committee and Board of Directors.
d) Membership dues will be billed after the Board approval.

Individual categories:

Associate - An Associate member supports the mission, vision, and goals of ZAA.  Associate members may not vote or hold office. Annual dues $50.

Student - Student membership is for individuals who are preparing for a career in zoos, are enrolled full time or part time in school (high school, trade school, junior or community college, or university), and support the mission, vision, and goals of ZAA.  Upon no longer being a student, the member is eligible for associate membership.  Student members may not vote or hold office.  All applications must be accompanied by a copy of a valid, current student ID or a letter from your advisor, dean, or teacher. Annual dues $35.

Zoological Specialist - The Zoological Specialist member supports the mission, vision, and goals of ZAA.  Zoological Specialist members must have a minimum of five years full-time paid experience in the zoological industry.  This category may not vote or hold office. Annual dues $75.

Professional - Professional membership supports the mission, vision, and goals of ZAA.  This is the highest level of membership for an individual and is based on the individual’s knowledge, expertise, and experience.  Professional members must be sponsored by two (2) current ZAA professional members and approved by the Board of Directors.  Professional members help in shaping ZAA policy by voting in ZAA elections and are eligible to serve on committees and hold office.  Annual dues $100.

 

FACILITY MEMBERSHIP

Facility membership supports the mission, vision, and goals of ZAA.  Facilities are required to have proper structures, security, diets, permits and paperwork, risk management, public safety, general welfare, and positive USDA inspections. Review the ZAA Animal Care and Enclosure Standards

Two sponsor letters and a site inspection are required. The site inspection is at the expense of the facility.

Facility membership is a multi-tired process.  The process begins with facility membership.  Non-accredited facilities must reach accredited status within five years of their membership approval. 

This category does not indicate accreditation or approval of the ZAA.  All accredited facilities must keep their membership current to maintain their accredited status.  Annual dues $2,500.  

Facility members must engage in one or more of the following:

  • Exhibits exotic and/or wild animals to the public and has an educational and conservation message.  The facility may be open to the public with regular hours or by appointment.  Public visitation may be by facility staff guided or self-guided tours.
  • Educational outreach programs using exotic and/or wild animals.
  • Breeds exotic/or wild animals for conservation purposes or supplying zoological facilities

ZAA facility membership and accreditation is not available to exotic and/or wild animal pet owners or sanctuaries.

Facility Membership Application

• Ability to apply for facility accreditation
• The opportunity to exchange ideas with other members
• Legislative updates affecting the industry
• Access to the Members Only site, which includes the newsletter archives for the ZAA and the International Society of Zooculturists
• Access to view and list on the Available and Wanted Animal List.  (Accredited facilities only)
• Access to the ZAA's Veterinary Advisory Group.  (Accredited facilities only)


Procedure for facility membership application (click here for chart describing the procedure):

a) Submit the completed application for facility membership.
b) Submit two letters of sponsorship from current ZAA Professional members. Neither sponsor may be from the facility. The sponsors must be from separate facilities and may not be related to each other. (Sponsors should send the letters directly to the ZAA office.)
c) Submit a $250 deposit to cover the costs of the site inspection. Any amount over will be billed to the facility and any amount under will be reimbursed.

 

d) Receive a pro simple majority vote of the Membership Committee and the Board of Directors.
e) Membership dues will be billed after the Board approval.

 

COMMERCIAL

May hold or own animals but the primary function of their business is to offer animals, supplies, services, equipment or products to organization members. Commercial members receive free of charge a 3.65" by 1.5" ad in each issue of the newsletter and are listed along with their logo and a link to their website on the Commercial member page. Commercial members may not vote or hold office. Annual dues $750.
